In the late 1800's and early 1900's, northern industrialist like George Vanderbilt discovered Western North Carolina. Vanderbilt created the Biltmore House while others preferred the higher elevations of the Sapphire Valley region.
These pioneers built over 5 luxury Inns like The Lake Toxaway Inn and The Fairfield Inn. Common in all these Inns, or on the property, was a General Store.
The General Store was the place to find locally created crafts, soaps, jams, jellies, relishes and more. These 'founders' understood that the 'locals' knew how to get the best fruits and vegetables from the land and create some of the finest products. The Inns and General Stores also imported fine products from around the region and USA for their guest!
This is the heritage of the Sapphire Valley General Store! In the grand, old tradition, we follow the same successful formula ~ use experienced local kitchens, farms and merchants and offer them to you!
